Montepulciano is a vigorous red grape variety widely planted over much of east-central Italy. It produces deeply colored, rich red wines with cherry, dark plum, boysenberry, spice and fresh acidity. Due to its moderate acid and tannin levels, Montepulciano produces wines that are smooth and mellow, yet robust and mouth-filling, with dependably high alcohol content. Food pairings: steak and beef dishes, lamb, tomato-based pasta dishes, and hard cheeses.
